Abstract

Professionalism of lecturers, as required by Article 45 of Law Number 14 of 2005, is a necessity for the success of an institution of higher education. As a professional, a lecturer should meet such requirements as course-related competence, academic qualification, teaching certification, and adequate physical and spiritual health. However, the result of the preliminary observation indicates that a large number of lecturers are still less professional in carrying out their duties, impacting the quality of implementation of the three pillars of higher education. This study aims to empirically examine the impact of competence, academic qualification, teaching certification, and welfare level of lecturers on the implementation of the three pillars of higher education and on the welfare of lecturers employed in private universities in Region X of Kopertis (Coordinating Body of Private Universities), currently called LLDikti (Higher Education Service Institution). This is a descriptive research involving certified lecturers employed in various private universities in the regions of LLDikti X, including West Sumatra Province, Riau Province, Jambi Province, and Riau Islands Province. The sample comprised 150 lecturers selected through the purposive sampling technique. Data was analyzed using a structural equation modeling method from Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS) statistics. The results of the study indicate that the lecturers’ competence, academic qualification, and welfare significantly influence implementation of the three pillars of higher education by the lecturers employed in private universities in the working area of LLDkti X, and only the teaching certification variable does not affect implementation of the three pillars of higher education.
