Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
Abstract
To address challenging behaviors, schools are implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. Buy-in from stakeholders is needed in order for PBIS to succeed. This qualitative research study aims to identify factors that lead to stakeholder buy-in of the PBIS approach to creating safe and effective schools. Nineteen professionals were interviewed in a southeastern state high school using both individual and focus groups. Results of the study indicate factors such as that professional development and teacher incentives lead to buy-in. Lack of consistency in implementation, lack of administrator support, and lack of time are barriers indicated by staff that impact the successful implementation of PBIS fully. Implications for school leadership and future PBIS research are discussed.
