Abstract

This study investigates the degree to which representational and decorative pictures influence sixth grade primary pupils in statistical problem solving. It also investigates pupils' attitude towards statistical concepts. For the purposes of the study, 137 pupils were asked to complete a questionnaire with two statistical problems accompanied by a representational picture and two by a decorative one. The results of the study indicate that the presence of both the representational and the decorative picture did not have a significant impact in pupil’s performance. In addition pupils dealt with statistical problems with no great difficulty and showed very positive attitudes towards statistical concepts.
