Abstract

There is a need for institutions to realise that Service Learning is becoming necessary because of the reality that education is becoming more isolated from real life. Past Service Learning research shows that involvement in Service Learning has personal and academic benefits. It is because of this reality and the passing of a law (The White Paper) that encouraged Higher Institutions in South Africa to be involved with community projects, that we initiated a Service Learning Pilot project. This journey (the actual pilot of a Service Learning programme) reflects on the problems that were encountered, the experiences of the students and volunteers as well as the mistakes that were made with regards to the timing of the project, the setting of outcomes and the selection of community partners. The reflections clearly show that you need more than enthusiasm and passion for Service Learning to succeed. You need willing institutions that will prioritise Service Learning by offering support in the form of training and resources.
