Abstract

Learning how to learn in today’s digital age requires students to have metacognitive and self-regulatory skills. This article reports findings of a research study that examined the metacognitive strategies of biology content experts using an iPad to complete reading and writing academic tasks in a semi-controlled learning environment. Results suggest that for learning to occur, we must consider the metacognitive, self-regulation, and epistemology of the learner in relation to both the digital device and the task. The authors suggest strategies for teaching and learning with mobile learning technologies in the twenty-first century in ways that help students become metacognitive.
