Abstract

Increased interest in educational research has emerged because of the consolidation of graduate programs and promotes the generation of knowledge. In Mexico, graduate schools’ institutions are endeavoring to increase the educational level with strategies based on online programs. This article presents a systematic review of a set of master’s degree theses in an Educational Technology program in a private Mexican university. From a population of 198 documents, we extracted a sample of 26 theses having similar characteristics and, specifically, studies conducted in Mexico in higher education in the Educational Technology program during the years 2006 to 2016. The purpose was to analyze the topics, methodologies, and characteristics of the educational research discussed in the articles and delve into the issue of educational technology and innovations in that field. The results were addressed in three categories: description of the documents, analysis of methodologies and results, and discussion of innovation in educational technology research. The findings review the trends and the impacts of research design on the achievement of innovation. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies have shown more positive effects than have descriptive and exploratory studies. The results may be useful to focus the postgraduate programs and educational research projects.
