Abstract

The relative discussion began in 2004, while the political change was completed afterwards by the election of the new president Mr. Hristofias in February of 2008. In the case of Cyprus, the history textbooks were imported mainly by Greece, a fact that delayed reforms in the teaching of history. The condition for peaceful living is the admission of past errors and the sincere discussion between all the parts, so to be achieved a reciprocal acceptable history of Cyprus. The teaching of historical course in Cyprus constitutes a postmodern “trauma” case, since the partition of island opened a crack in the historical production and made the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot identity depended from the corresponding identities of Greece and Turkey. The necessity of rewriting the textbooks has resulted from the new educational project for teaching a culture of peaceful living together, the reciprocal respect and collaboration of Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots so as Cyprus to be exempted from the possession. The purpose of this analysis is to highlight the different political opinions about the teaching of modern history.
