Abstract

Discrimination is a very complex issue that is manifested in various forms. Much research has been conducted on this issue in areas other than TESOL where discrimination seems to have received little attention. The study presented here is part of a larger investigation. Data were gathered through an electronic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. In this article we explore three EFL teachers’ voices concerning how they have been discriminated against at their workplaces. The findings shed light on how acts of discrimination upon EFL teachers in the Mexican context have a negative impact on teacher’s emotions and feelings and, hence, in their professional development. Furthermore, the results from this inquiry call for more research focusing on different related issues that is not restrained to the differential treatment received by NNESTs and NESTs but to searches for other types of discriminations that can be prejudicial to EFL teachers’ academic development.
