Abstract

This article reports the development of an achievement test on typhoons and earthquakes (ATTE) for junior high school students based on the Philippine K to 12 Science Curriculum. The original 150-item achievement test was administered to Grade 8 students in a public high school in the Philippines. The descriptive research design covered three major phases: preparation, development, and validation of the test. The items were initially subjected to item analysis. The results revealed that initial items satisfied the acceptable threshold for indices of difficulty and discrimination. These items were further subjected to tests of internal reliability and construct validity. The final pool of items was found to exhibit a very strong internal consistency and loaded on four components based on the cognitive skills set for the test. This study provides evidence that the ATTE is an instrument that exhibits sound psychometric properties when assessing the mastery of the students on the content on typhoons and earthquakes.
