Abstract

To most industrial designers, the focus of a design project is the technological function of a product and its connection with the product’s form language, but to a Point of Purchase (PoP) display designer, the focus of a PoP display design goes beyond these considerations. Because the main function of a PoP display is to attract consumers, to keep them informed, and further more to promote sales, the design strategy for PoP display design is very different from those for normal product design. A sponsored PoP display design project opens both industrial design students' and the professor’s eyes, and challenges them to think deeper, making their design more relevant and effective. This paper will explore and demonstrate what kind of design strategy should be used in a PoP display design project, and explain why these design considerations are important for both educating industrial design students and achieving a successful PoP display design. Specific examples of approaches integrated into a 3rd year sponsored design studio course will be illustrated.
