Abstract

This paper explores cultural issues in dealing with the epidemic by the schools managers. Respondents were selected from five public schools situated in Gauteng townships. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, and informal conversations over a period of six months. Cultural understandings towards the epidemic were explored. Although there were consistent significance of cultural approaches in individual’s perceptions, narrations and treatment of the illness, cultural approaches of any kind were refused by these public schools managers. Mary Douglas analysis of cultural theory of risk provided the lens in understanding what informs the public school managers understanding and dealing of HIV/AIDS
