Abstract

Recent advances in genomics and biotechnology have provided a new set of approaches, methods and media for new types of artistic endeavors. The so-called bio artists who are employing these tools are pushing the boundaries of art, while revealing at the same time what really goes on in science laboratories. A large array of techniques ranging from tissue culture, genetic engineering, and artificial life are currently being applied, and the products being displayed, in the name of art. In this paper, I will discuss the impact of biotechnology in the specific context of art. I will then propose a typology of bio art, drawing from several examples, with special reference to body art and inner-body art.
