Abstract

Many students have difficulty passing their first math course. This can increase the time it takes them to graduate or may result in them not graduating at all. Standard metrics of evaluation (i.e., GPA, SAT, TSI) for math skills have been a limiting factor and makes placement difficult as GPAs have different scales, and SATs are optional. Because of this, an evaluation of an assessment test for first-time math students was conducted. The short-term goal of this assessment is to determine if any remediation is needed while in the math course. Once refined, the long-term goal is to have student advisors use this assessment for the optimal first math course. With this in mind, students will be able to take their upper-division courses sooner and are more likely to graduate.
