Abstract

The capabilities of interconnection of computers and the internet have created a different teaching and learning environment which requires new pedagogical paradigms. Here, we assess the e-learning standing of university students in Nigeria, using the leading-ICT university as a case study. The paper discusses the availability of technology and infrastructure, investigates students’ literacy and proficiency in its use. The following findings show the factors promoting learners’ readiness. It is estimated that about a quarter of the students have personal computers, 87% have access to computers even when they do not have their own computers, about 91% have used email & the internet, 41% are comfortable with the quality of internet service. The implications of these findings in terms of preparedness are discussed. Policy suggestions are also advanced to improve on infrastructure and accessibility. Strategies were suggested to foster more interactions between the private cybercafé operators and the University Management.
