Abstract

Character strength refers to a multidimensional construct comprised of positive traits manifest in an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This study investigated character strength, parental attachment, and internet addiction among adolescents in Indonesia. This descriptive study collected data through an online survey voluntarily from 287 adolescents aged between sixteen and nineteen years old, enrolled in senior high schools in Indonesia and lived with parents. Correlational and Multiple Regression Analyses were performed to test the hypothesis of the present study. Results found that parental attachment was strongly associated with character strength among adolescents. As predicted, secure attachment characterized with a high score in Trust and Communication subscales and a low score in Alienation subscale was linked with the character strength. Internet addiction was found to be negatively related to character strength among Indonesian adolescents. Parental attachment, internet addiction, and gender were revealed to be unique predictors for character strengths. Implications for studying the character strengths in adolescence are discussed, along with directions for future research.
