Abstract

Architecture, as a dynamically developing and transforming field, has always been affected by current developments and approaches. Therefore, it is necessary for architectural education to keep up with the current developments so that it can remain up-to-date at all times. Architectural design studio, which is a significant component of architectural education, is especially important since it combines knowledge and skills in an effective way. This study aims to examine changes, educational policies, and perspectives that have affected architectural education so far and to develop a sustainable model that assumes that sustainability in architectural design studios can be achieved through a knowledge- and research-based perspective. The study has been designed by adopting a conceptual perspective, and the data obtained from the literature review were integrated to the conceptual framework by using historical method and through comparative analyses and implications. The proposed model is significant because of the following reasons: it includes predictions based on the evaluation of architectural education’s historical development and the implications made from knowledge and research-based educational models; and it evaluates teaching styles and learning theories in studio pedagogy together with current tendencies.
