Abstract

This study explored the life choices and experiences of mature women of extraordinary creative accomplishment from the arts, sciences, education and entrepreneurial pursuits. The aim of this study was to examine, in their own words, their journey to accomplishment. Narrative data analysis revealed unique paths to productivity for each of the women as well as common central themes that emerged. The 11 women chosen for in-depth narrative study had a pioneering spirit combined with a passion for their field of endeavor, often manifesting itself in a sense of mission. Determination, confidence and perseverance assisted each of the women throughout their lives. They were characterized by a strong sense of adventure, an independent nature and risk-taking in pursuit of their creative output. Results support emerging theories of women’s talent development whereas women may chose to pursue diverse endeavors in both personal and professional realms and the social importance of the chosen arena is a factor in the development of their talents.
