Abstract

The present paper attempts to compare foreign and indigenous secondary students’ expected attitudes toward mathematics by calculating their similarities and differences, and also to find out which are the issues that differentiate these expected attitudes. Paired samples t-tests and the ANOVA technique were used to produce the dimension of differentiation. The instrument, which measured 66 Greek secondary students and 27 foreign students' expected attitudes towards statistics, was the Tapia and Marsh ATMI scale (Attitudes Toward Mathematics Inventory) and it was administered during the academic year 2010 - 11. Additionally, this paper examines the extent to which students’ age, sex, grade, country of origin, and length of stay in Greece influence their attitudes toward mathematics. The results are discussed. Implications for further research are also made.
