How the Author of Common Sense Uses Rhetoric

In Common Sense, the author, Thomas Paine, uses persuasive writing to manipulate the emotions of his readers. His writing nearly forces his readers to despise the King and the system of government that is allowing the King to have power over them. He manipulates their emotions by making them feel inferior to the King. A quotation that demonstrates is, "For all men being originally equals, no one by birth could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual preference to all others forever" (Thomas Paine). Later in the document, Paine puts emphasis on the government's selfishness. He explains how Great Britain is deceiving the American colonists by making them believe that the British is protecting them, when it reality, they are not. A quotation that supports this is, "We have boasted the protection of Great Britain, without considering, that her motive was interest not attachment; that she did not protect us from our enemies on our own account, but from her enemies on her own account" (Thomas Paine).
