Multimodal Literacies MOOC’s Updates

Essential Peer Reviewed Update #8

Take one dimension of learner differences. What are the most appropriate literacies strategies to address this dimension of difference?

I have been engaged to promote international projects of kids in the grammar schools in Japan and in Scandinavia.

One big problem for such projects is language. It is not always easy to communicate since these kids lack common language like English.

One strategy I have taken is to use the other modes than oral or audio. According to prof Bill Cope's categories, visual or gestural were especially powerful literacy strategy.

The exhibit 2 is some scenes of a project with Finnish and Japanese 6th graders where kids demonstrated on what are 'in' in their schools. Visual information helped a lot even if lack of common language and both sides were so interested and would like to continue the projects.
