e-Learning Ecologies MOOC’s Updates

Optional Update #2 - Gamification

Even understanding all of the topics discussed in this section of the course, for sure, in my opinion, gamification is the one that could be very promising.

Why? I just learned right now watching on this video below that people spend 3 billion hours per week gaming. Because of this type of behavior and understanding of how to play a game, gamification can easily be used in students routines.

I also learned in Scott Hebert watching his video at TEDxUAlberta an exciting point of view. "If the nowadays education system was a business, do you put your money in it?". On his point of view, no! And I agree with that. Why? Because the education system is not evolving, still the same about las centuries and is the same perspective, we have seen during our classes here. He said later in the video, "The education system is a system in an engagement crisis."

But Scott Hebert, also show a solution for that problem: Gamification!

Suzanne Holloway highlighted in her article named Gamification in Education: 4 Ways To Bring Games To Your Classroom that Gamification is the use of game design and mechanics to enhance non-game contexts by increasing participation, engagement, loyalty and competition. These methods can include points, leaderboards, direct tournaments, and stickers or badges, and can be found in industries as varied as personal healthcare, retail—and, of course, education.

She also mentioned other exciting ideas such as implement a class-wide rewards system, gamify homework to encourage informal learning and create a digital, customizable classroom management system built on role-playing themes.

The last but not least, she finalizes saying, "Those who resist gamification in education often cite its improper use of rewards as a motivator. Critics argue that relying on games can be detrimental to intrinsic motivation. Receiving a badge for a job well done is meaningless without an understanding of what specific skills this badge rewards."
