YouTube Impact
Abstract
This interpretative research paper examines how U.S. President Barack Obama’s 2010 State of the Union Address is being used in news-related parodies on YouTube and the impact of viewer messages posted after the YouTube parodies on political communication and discourse. The qualitative study focuses on key themes that emerge from the review of the president’s address, more than 50 news-related parodies found on YouTube as well as the examination of more than 2,000-related messages posted on YouTube. The news-related parodies and traffic generated by the most popular parodies contribute to deliberative democracy and emerging literature about the role of YouTube in political communication.
