This article examines the changes in public art beginning with the Third Reich through the present day. It includes various types of public art that range from monuments, memorials, and murals, some of which served as propaganda. The article highlights different transitions in the content of the public art as well as the form of the art itself, government and civic involvement in public art, and the newer commercial role of public art. These transitions aid in the explanation of Berlin’s current dynamic urban landscape.
