Abstract

This article is based on the master degree research of first author about the relationship between the visual, sonorous, and verbal codes explored by Wassily Kandinsky in his book, “Concerning The Spiritual in Art,” and the essential concepts for this relation. Kandinsky formulated the concept of inner sonority, which refers to the inner content of the artwork. Inner sonority allows different outward forms to resonate in the same way in a viewer's soul. Kandinsky created new directions for art regarding the expansion of the inner sonority over the external values. This paper aims to present some reflection on these new directions, as well as introduce some considerations about the use of this approach in Contemporaneity. The following subjects will be explored: (a) the path taken by the artist in the development of his language, focusing on the aspects related to the visual, sonorous, and verbal codes;(b) inner sonority and the concept of Monumental Art, which was created by Kandinsky and displayed in the scenic composition “The Yellow Sound”; and (c) an artistic essay created by the first author of this paper as an contemporary example, inspired by the concepts explored in the research about inner sonority in Kandinsky’s work.
