Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand fitness app experiences related to exercise behaviors after participants used various fitness apps over several months. Methods: This study included participants from a larger quantitative study that examined fitness app usage over several months. The Theory of Planned Behavior provided a framework for this study, including the constructs of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups and interviews with a total of twenty-three participants. Transcriptions from the focus groups and interviews were analyzed and themes were developed using deductive methods. Results: Six themes were developed related to the constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Conclusion: Fitness app technology is not a strong influence on exercise behaviors. Other factors, not related to technology, were more influential on exercise behaviors, including a positive attitude about exercise, motivation from peer relationships, and goal setting.
