Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade primary school students’ perception and conceptualization of environmental citizenship, and examining their perceptions and experiences in terms of their own environmental citizen identity. A qualitative research was designed and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with primary school students. The participants of the study were twenty-two students selected through a maximum variety sampling method. The gathered data were analyzed through an induction analysis technique. The research results indicated that students describe environmental citizenship as being sensitive to environmental issues and having responsible environmental behavior. Students thought cleaning the environment is the most responsible environmental behavior that the citizen should do. The students assess themselves as environmental citizens, but do not consider themselves as having adequate levels of environmental citizenship.
