Abstract

The rapid development and diversification of sports around the world is influenced in part by movements such as the Olympics and Paralympics. As a global endeavor, the Olympic movement and the values associated with it help facilitate communication and education between societies, groups, and individuals. At the Tsukuba International Academy for Sport Studies (TIAS) the focus on Olympic and Paralympic education as part of the Sport for Tomorrow legacy is one aspect of the internationalization of sport education in Japan in the lead up to Tokyo 2020. Research at TIAS reflects and incorporates the values of sport and Olympism in projects that involve students, training future sport leaders, and addressing the academic aims of TIAS as well as creating a legacy for the Tokyo 2020 Games. This article outlines TIAS efforts in sport education and the development of linkages between Japan, other countries, and organizations and the enhancement of social capital in local and international communities.
