Abstract

Music played an important role in distinguishing Catholic, Lutheran, and Calvinist faiths between 1500 and 1700. Music was a central part of spiritual formation. A church’s music is part of its image or brand of worship. The same features of distinction, accessibility, and style are critical goals for worship music from the baroque to the present era.
