Abstract

In this age of global communication, computers and multimedia devices can often assist in the learning of the design process and virtual reality design enables the user to become immersed in a three-dimensional design world. In this paper the authors propose a virtual reality design process model and its impact when used as a pedagogical tool. The approach encompasses the development of a three-dimensional design process model into an innovative proposal for a virtual reality model. The virtual reality aspect takes into account the evolution of the design process from conception to retirement by navigating through these key areas in a three-dimensional manner. Real time self-authoring software is utilised that enables the user to progress through each stage of the design process automatically to propose solutions to design briefs and specifications. A framework for teaching the design process using virtual reality is proposed using Design and the Virtual Educator (DAVE) methodology
