Abstract

Historical monuments are the buildings and structures, memorable places and objects, material and spiritual artefacts representing the historical events in the life of a nation, development of the society and the country. They reflect the development process of the human society, revealing exactly how it has been happening at a certain time and in a certain place. North Cyprus is a country with a rich historical past. Since the country is in the ongoing process of development, mechanisms for protection of historical monuments are not well set yet and programs of identifying the historical monuments don’t exist at all. Research and analyses for STREMAH 2009 -“Sustainable city planning: preserving historical objects” (where the mechanisms of classifications of non-monumental antique structures /NMAS/ according to their values -historical, cultural, archaeological, architectural - were invented), were used as a base for this article. The aim of the research: In this paper we have concentrated on historical heritage and sustainable city planning issues. This article conveys the methods of identification and classification of historical NMAS, with registering them as historical structures needing protection as a future plan. Subject of research: Anadolu Street,City of Lapethos, district of Kyrenia in North Cyprus. Solution and results: the historical heritage of the district was examined and analyzed; physical inspection of NMAS was conducted; their functionality was interpreted; NMAS were classified and listed according to the type of heritage they belong to; suggestions were given for the sustainable city planning and utilization of NMAS in compliance with the basic principles of their preservation.
