Abstract

This paper is a comparative study on the sustainability of two Persian gardens located on the arid central plateau of Iran. The authors observe sustainability in many elements of traditional Iranian architecture and landscape architecture and describe how these methods of design have responded to climate problems over many centuries. Today, a major contributing factor to increased pollution in Iran is the usage of non-standard, unsustainable models in architecture and urban open spaces. For that reason, sustainable design is very important to the future of Iranian cities. By analyzing the sustainable and climatic features of the selected case studies, Fin Garden in Kashan and Dolatabad Garden in Yazd, this paper identifies ways to create green space for sustainable landscaping in similar climates. At the conclusion, the authors present guidelines and recommendations for sustainable landscape design.
