The Street as a Temporary Eventscape
Abstract
Beginning with a broader context of planning strategy, specifically looking at the opportunities found within the master plan documents in an urban realm, the paper will focus on transformations possible at the street-level. These transformations are tactical in nature; responding to the (perceived) long-term programmatic strategies instigated by urban planning. The paper offers a contrast between two methods of introducing street-level transformations to existing streets: one is a design-led process exploring the potential of a reflexive approach to pedestrian re-routing on account of construction disruption typically found in the everyday reality of maintenance and refurbishment; the other is a community-led reimagination of a neighbourhood through a seasonal/event-rich intervention that is simple in its introduction and rich in its results.
