Abstract
This paper offers a short general picture of the Finnish adult education system regarding basic mathematics education. Two different learning contexts are illustrated: the first one is a folk high school and the second one a prison. The descriptive data was gathered in interviews with students and teachers. It reflects personal experiences of some Finnish adults in studying basic mathematics and their teachers’ perspectives on adults’ learning.
