Abstract

This study examines the identity of Sino-Portuguese architectural styles in Phuket and studies sustainable development in this region. This study uses both documentary research and field surveys, including in-depth interviews with 30 owners and 10 specialists who know well the cultural significance of Sino-Portuguese style buildings. We analyzed interview data with descriptive analysis. The results showed that the identities of Sino-Portuguese styles have their own unique design, such as windows, doors and roofs, and reflect Chinese beliefs about how to locate a building. In addition, for the sustainable development of the Sino-Portuguese architectural style, Chinese people in Phuket should work to protect and conserve their cultural heritage and the government should set policies to encourage people for preserve traditional cultural remnants.
