Abstract

Analysis of the medical documentation and statistics of the decade-long HIV epidemic in the Irkutsk District reveal the ongoing ravages of the disease upon both thousands of adolescents using psychoactive substances and children born to the most productively active HIV-infected women. As the annual growth in the number of HIV-infected individuals among pregnant women has been tracked, the birth rate of children having contact with HIV infection in the perinatal period has increased year by year. In 2009 in the Irkutsk District there were 733 children born from HIV-infected mothers.
