The Orange Revolution
Abstract
The Orange Revolution occurred in Ukraine on November 25, 2004. Ukrainian children witnessed this historical event, which was documented through their drawings at the time the revolution occurred. Examining lifeworlds of participants through image based texts revealed important findings including (1) literal and symbolic information of children as witnesses; (2) documentation of remarkable Ukrainian historical events seen through the eye of the child; (3) recording of children’s individual, emotional, and ideological ideas as meaning makers, and (4) fostering understandings of participants’ influences, and collective social worlds. It is recommended that visual imagery of similar historical/political content should be collected as teaching tools to enable understandings of societal influences, participant viewpoints, and political/social forces occurring in times of world crises.
