Abstract

Semantics is a science of meaning. Key terms focus words and key words are explained with the help of relational meaning. It is helpful for teaching the second language. Urdu is national language of Pakistan and it is a combination of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Sanskrit and English words. There are about 25% words of Urdu which were derived from Arabic. Hence Urdu is the most suitable language for understanding Quranic concepts. The researcher applied semantic approach on 40 graduates’ female students for teaching some verses of Quran as Arabic is the second language in Pakistan. Two teachers were engaged in this experiment. Firstly some key words of Arabic were translated in their basic meanings like manner, voice, rumors, discipline, fairness, justice, ridicule, taunt, suspicion, race, righteousness, faith, and guidance etc. Then most suitable relational meanings of some focus words were searched out. Both the teachers tried to create a semantic field of key words and explained the concepts of these words in Quranic context. After completing Sura Hujarat a list of key words was prepared and the students were asked through a questionnaire that whether they have understood the concept of words more clearly in Quranic context through semantic approach than traditional approach. All the students opined that semantic approach was much better to understand Quranic concept in larger perspective. Then the researcher recommended application of semantic approach in teaching of Quran in Pakistan.
