Abstract

Over the course of time, various forms of religion came into existence in the Indian subcontinent as a by-product of cultural evolution. A phase of tantrism is one among them which emerged between 700-1100 AD and took all its contemporary religious sects into the grip. Worship of the Mother goddess, opposition of social discrimination, and giving equal status to women and the deprived class by providing them important roles in religious rituals are a few highlighted characteristics of tantrism. Due to its secular and materialistic approach tantrism received widespread public support. This study focuses on Charyageets, the oldest Tantric texts of Buddhism. Written in the vernacular, these songs help evaluate the socio-cultural aspects of the contemporary society.
