Abstract

This paper explores how drawing is able to move movement through a close reading of an ongoing experimental project involving dance and live drawing. An account of the act of drawing is given by reflecting on first person experience from the perspective of the artist, discussions with collaborating dancers, choreographers and observers and study of recorded material of the process. Through the lens of contemporary philosophical thought on the body-to-space relation the paper discusses the bodily complicity between participants during experimentation and substantiates the pivotal role of drawing in this relational movement. Finally the focus shifts to the relation of the drawn object to the performed movement, involving a discussion of the non-representational diagram’s relation to actual space produced by “not yet” danced movement. This illuminates the drawn object as a form of virtual space image – or what is called a “movement object” – supporting the research proposition of this project; that drawing is a medium of movement.
