Abstract

This paper begins by addressing the notion of a "digital divide" between developed and less developed countries. By contrasting several definitions, the reader will come to realise that there are there many factors that impact the rate of technology uptake in a country. With this as a foundation, the particular case of Jamaica is considered based on most recent statistical information. The realities of sustaining technology use in the Jamaican context are examined through specific research on technology challenges within a Jamaican university setting. The trends in this setting have been established/triangulated through surveys, qualitative interviews, field studies and formal written feedback from study participants. The paper concludes by suggesting how to move forward given the identified barriers to integrating technology in this developing country and others of similar context.
