Abstract

Using scientific techniques, certain technological variations, such as composition data, component species and microstructure, actually provide abundant information not only related to manufacturing technology, but also potters’ potential, capability, and even limitation in representing their intent for the final product. In terms of reviewing the detailed technological choices, modifications and even challenges, the researcher searches for the artist’s intention for the entire creating process. The present study analyzes technological variations appearing in Chinese Southern Song Guan (SSG) imperial shards to gain insights into the imperial potters’ intent for their famous SSG ware.
