Abstract

Urban planning is intrinsically linked to transportation planning but they are frequently taught as discreet courses and usually by faculty with expertise in only one of the disciplines. This paper discusses the methodology used in a decade of team teaching an upper level undergraduate course in Urban Planning and Transportation Systems. Each of the faculty members brings their respective knowledge base in urban planning and transportation systems to bear in developing project based learning pedagogy. Two projects will be examined in depth where a regional planning agency provided a topical issue in transportation that was developed into a student project. Successful completion of the project by the student team required a literature review, field research, planning methods, a written report and public presentation. Teaching methodology, student assessment and outcome evaluation of the two projects will be detailed.
