Abstract

This paper seeks to explore if and where there is a correlation with regard to sustainability within a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the institutes of higher education (IHE)–colleges & universities–within that area. The MSA data, secondary in nature, was collected by Dr. Andrew Schiller utilizing the 2000 Census. Data regarding the IHE comes from The College Sustainability Report Card. The methodologies used focused on stratifying the data and ranking the schools using grades “A” through “D”–with “A” being the highest and “D” being the lowest. Furthermore, this paper suggests that the deployment of social capital within the respective regions will result in high levels of sustainability for both the school and its respective region. Ultimately, this paper seeks to shine a light on the exceptional correlations and striking divergences between the sustainability of the MSA and IHE performance. By such study, future areas of research to explain this dynamic can be identified.
