Abstract

This qualitative investigation examines fishery resource conflict in and around Songkhla Lake in Southern Thailand and explores sustainable solutions for their management. Data were collected from interviews and focus group discussions with anglers, local residents, government representatives, and environmental activists. Results revealed that conflict over fishery resources in Songkhla Lake arises from the use of destructive fishing equipment and encroachment in conservation areas. The main conflicting parties are general anglers, illegal fishing groups, government agencies, and volunteers taking care of conservation areas. These conflicts cause divisions and a lack of cooperation within and between communities. All parties agreed on a sustainable, participatory approach to conflict management, consisting of collaborative community-level management and a holistic treatment of Songkhla Lake.
