Abstract

The present study was aimed at exploring the link between perceived quality of work-related life (QWL) and health among industrial employees. The investigator developed Quality of Work-Related Scale (QWLS) for the study. Abhyankar’s Health Index (HI) was used to assess health status. The incidental sample for the study comprised of 278 employees holding officer/manager positions in manufacturing industry in and around Pune, India. The obtained data were subjected to Pearson product moment correlation and regression analysis. A significant negative correlation was found between QWL and health problems (r= -.46, p<.01). Simple linear regression analysis showed significant contribution of QWL in health (F(1,276)=73.73, p<.01). QWL contributed 21% variance in health problems (ß= -.46, t= -8.59, p<.01). The Satisfaction Index score on QWL showed negative association with health problems (r = -.41, p<.01). The data were further subjected to multivariate regression analysis using stepwise selection procedure, in order to probe into the relative contribution of individual dimensions of QWL in health. Work-life balance, general well-being and work-related stress emerged as the significant predictors of health. They explained, respectively 21%, 5% and 1% variance in health problems. The results are discussed in the light of the available research findings and the psychosocial context in India.
