Abstract

This article explores literature featuring individuals with disabilities and written for students in pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Stories, in written, visual or oral form, have been used all over the world for thousands of years to facilitate discussions, explain customs and traditions, pass on knowledge from one generation to the next, develop behavioral norms in different contexts, and for recording history. Literature for therapeutic purposes has been used since at least the late 1930s (Lu, 2008). Information about the 140 books we selected is designed to help identify those focused on individuals with disabilities and characters with whom children and youth can identify. These books can be used by parents, teachers, and others who work with students with disabilities to facilitate discussions about inclusion, adaptation, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
