Stakeholders’ Views on Sport Education and Peace in a Serbian Village School
Abstract
Since the conflicts and NATO bombings in the 1990s, regions of Serbia— and all over the former Yugoslavia— are struggling to overcome economic and social challenges within their education systems. UNICEF Belgrade along with the Serbian Ministry of Education believe that enhancing the sport and health component in education can decrease violence in schools. A case study was conducted in a Serbian village school. It examined the stakeholders’ views on the role sport education, recreation and play have in developing peace and social cohesion within the school and community. Children, educators and parents felt very positive about sport education and its role in promoting peace, which suggests that the school community, along with UNICEF and the Serbian Ministry of Education believe developing programs that connect sport education to peace in post conflict areas can be used to decrease violence.
