Abstract

This article presents results from a study exploring the use of a psychoeducational group format specifically developed for self-mutilating students in a high school setting. The 8-week group sessions covered topics such as feelings and reactions of others, recognizing emotions and processing them, learning adaptive coping strategies, building positive relationships, self-mutilation explored in-depth, information via published research, and the healing process. Group facilitators noted self-mutilating students consistently met objectives of the content areas, with increased mastery as sessions progressed. Self-mutilating students rated the group experience as positive, indicating a high degree of interest and information from the psychoeducational format, with no difference reported across session topics.
