Abstract

Dr Elda Lyster will introduce the range of approaches currently implemented in South Africa to help develop literacy within families. Snoeks Desmond M.Ed. (Adult Education) will describe the work done in the Family Literacy Project to support parents who in turn support the literacy development of their children. Examples will be given on how reading and writing have become part of the life of rural communities and encouraged the establishment of community libraries, children's reading groups and adult book clubs. Zimbili Dlamini (Higher Diploma in ABET) will present stories of how rural families have adopted and adapted the family literacy approach. Lucy Thornton M.Ed. (Foreign Language Teaching) will present case studies of how family literacy is being done with caregivers/parents and their children in different situations, for example through preschools, playgroups and drop-in centres for orphaned and/or vulnerable children.
