Abstract

This is a qualitative investigation to identify cultural developments in Nakhon Pathom Province that protect Lao Khrang ethnic heritage and identity. The researchers analyze data from secondary documents and field research collected from five majority Lao Khrang sub-districts of Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. Positive aspects of cultural developments can be harnessed to help safeguard Lao Khrang identity against erosion from future projects. Results reveal that key elements of Lao Khrang culture in Nakhon Pathom have been maintained due to development, in some cases being enhanced by state investment and increased access to consumers. The results also show that development has had a positive impact on youth participation in cultural heritage. It is noted that a static snapshot of past culture should not be the desired outcome, but a continually developing reflection of traditional practices suitable for the modern world.
